Inhoud

This course – organized in co-operation with Ghent University – is conceived as a seminar on the theory of literary translation and a workshop in which major theoretical texts will be read and discussed. These texts make up the field of translation studies and include works by, amongst others, Schleiermacher, Benjamin, Jakobson, Venuti and reflect on both influential views on translation in different phases of European cultural history and the more recent trends in the field toward the ideology and ethics of literary translation. In the seminar, the textlinguistic, cognitive, sociological and cultural level of the literary translation will thus be at the center of theoretical discussions.

In focusing on the above subjects, the seminar will subdivided into three major thematic parts: 1) Conceptual foundations of theoretical thinking on literary translation (Free/Literal Translation; Author/Authorship and Translation; Memory and Translation); 2) Translation and Society (Sociology of Translation; Censorship and Translation; Centre/Periphery and Translation); 3) Case Studies, in which students will be introduced into applying specific translatological methods and theories onto specific cases of translated texts.

These three parts be guided by discussions, which will consider questions of translatability, fidelity, the hierarchical division between original texts and their translations, and the biased politics of translation. The discussions of specific texts will focus on the relationship between translation, literary canonization, nationalism, post-colonialism, and national representation.

Through blended learning, students will be given the opportunity, by means of guided independent learning, to acquire competences within the field of Translation Studies.

Guest lectures by specialists in the field will provide insight into specific problems addressed in translation theory.
