This course intends to introduce students to the intricacies of communication between cultures. In a series of ten talks lecturers with different backgrounds will give their point of view on cultural communication, specifically regarding their field of expertise. Theories to be presented will be: Edward T. Hall, Gert Hofstede, Brendan McSweeney, Ingrid Piller, Adrian Holliday.
Deze cursus heeft als doel de studenten kennis te laten met de problemen van de communicatie tussen culturen. In een reeks van tien voordrachten zullen docenten met verschillende achtergronden hun standpunt over culturele communicatie geven, in het bijzonder met betrekking tot hun vakgebied, taal, land. De volgende theorieën zullen aan bod komen: Edward T. Hall, Gert Hofstede, Brendan McSweeney, Ingrid Piller, Adrian Holliday.

Students are able to pin down differences in cultures in terms of parameters as seen in class, be it according to Hofstede’s, Hall’s, Trompenaar’s, Piller’s or others’ classifications. They are able to show that these differences are ascribable to geographical and/or educational circumstances and are not maybe induced but not determined by natural causes. At the end of term students are able to describe behaviours that are acceptable in specific cultures and are not in others, without this having any implication as to its moral valuation.
