This course is designed to prepare students for conducting research independently in the field of translation. It provides a broad overview of the discipline of translation studies. Students will gain knowledge about the development, the major concepts and theoretical approaches as well as the trends in translation studies. They will be guided to establish a theoretical and/or an analytical framework and to find appropriate research methods for carrying out their own research projects.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to
The student has knowledge about the different schools, movements and subjects within translation research and related research disciplines.
•He/she can approach the discipline scientifically.
•He/she can link theories from translation science with practical experience.
•He/she can describe research methods that are employed in order to do translation research.
•He/she can formulate research questions within the domain of translation science and comparative linguistics.
•He/she can attune the subject of the master’s thesis to the research domains of translation science and comparative linguistics.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
SELF Presentation determines 25% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 25% of the final mark.

The evaluation consists of the following assignment categories:

All information about the evaluation will be communicated in time via the online learning platform. The student is responsible for being registered on the online learning platform. If the student encounters any problems registering on the online learning platform, the lecturer must be informed as soon as possible by e-mail.
The student will receive a grade for each partial evaluation. If the student does not participate in one or more partial evaluations, the final result will be 'absent'. For the evaluation of written assignments the lecturer uses plagiarism detection software.
The evaluation components are the same for the first and second session. The results of separate components can, on written request by the student via e-mail, be transferred to the next session.
For each assessment component, the course instructor(s) will explicitly indicate the permissibility of using generative AI or MT tools, specifying whether its usage is prohibited, limited to certain extents, or fully permitted. Non-compliance with these specifications will be considered academic fraud and penalized accordingly.
