Course Content

This course discusses the role of existential thinking in the history of philosophy. The aim of the course is to outline the origin, the development and the reception of existential thinking and to highlight some crucial themes within it: genesis, guilt, fear, boredom, individuality,... The role and influence of crucial thinkers such as Hegel, Kant, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Camus, Heidegger, Jaspers, De Beauvoir, Ortega y Gasset and Marcel are discussed.

The main focus is on the monograph 'Wat ons verplicht I. Essay over mens en existentie' (Damon 2019), in addition two other texts are given as self-study.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has insight into the central themes of existential thinking, and has mastered the relevant terminology of the authors discussed. He/she is also able to place the discussed themes in the light of historical developments in philosophy.
