This course discusses the role of existential thinking in the history of philosophy. The aim of the course is to outline the origin, the development and the reception of existential thinking and to highlight some crucial themes within it: genesis, guilt, fear, boredom, individuality,... The role and influence of crucial thinkers such as Hegel, Kant, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Camus, Heidegger, Jaspers, De Beauvoir, Ortega y Gasset and Marcel are discussed.
The main focus is on the monograph 'Wat ons verplicht I. Essay over mens en existentie' (Damon 2019), in addition two other texts are given as self-study.
The focus is on the monograph “Wat ons verplicht I. Essay over mens en existentie”. Three texts are given for self-study, one of which is “Wat ons verplicht II. Essay over denken en existentie” (Damon 2024).
The student has at the end of the course insight into the central themes of existential thinking, and has mastered the relevant terminology of the authors discussed. The student is also able to place the discussed themes in the light of historical developments in philosophy. Also, the student shows to be competent in reading, understanding and processing the texts for self-study.
