Course Content

The course’s goal is to offer an overview of the art of painting and sculpting in the 19th and 20th centuries. The students are expected to be able to place art historic phenomena within a historic context and see the causal links between them. At the same time, attention will be devoted to intrinsic aesthetic characteristics which can be distinguished in the individual art works.

The course begins with a generic timeline which starts with the French revolution and ends at the First World War, the key dates will then be shown on this timeline: cultural-historic events which had a lasting influence on the cultural production at the time. Thereafter, the most important stylistic and art historic directions will be discussed as they were during their time period. We will start with Neoclassicism, will then continue with Romanticism, Academicism, the emergence of non-Western influences, paintings in Britain during the first half of the 19th century (the Sublime and the Picturesque), Naturalism and Realism. A special zoom will be placed on the painter Eduard Manet, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism and the Avant-Gardes from the beginning of the 20th century. It is important that the students are able to place all of these artistic movements in a broader historic context.

Because this is an overview-course, it is also the intention that its contents can be considered common knowledge and it is therefore also expected that the students can not only recognize the discussed art works and place them within the art movements, but they should also be able to name the artist and art work and give an approximate date for it.

The students are also expected to have a limited personal input. As there is an immense wealth of artistic movements which took place during this time, it is obviously impossible to strive for completeness and therefore the students get the possibility to add an aspect of this period to the course that we do not tackle during the semester. They will do this though a small preparation and the presentation they consider best fit. It is not the intention that this exercise becomes the subject of a written paper and the focus is fully on the interest and shrewdness of the student.
