Course Content

The course will develop and provide insight in the archaeology of the Low Countries from the Roman until the Early post-Medieval period. A global overview of the chronology will be provided, whereby per period, an important theme will be covered. It is not possible to cover all the important events per period, so the lectures will serve as an introduction, whereby the most important economic and political events will be discussed, as well as important sites within Belgium and the Netherlands, and the attributed material culture will be discussed.

The first lecture will start with the Roman towards the Early post-Medieval period. Important topics will be covered, including Migration in the Early Medieval period, Christianization, long distance trade, funerary practices throughout the ages, the formation of cities, whereby also other archaeological topics will be touched upon. Each class is a combination of a lecture and a student presentation. The theme of the lecture will be introduced (e.g. Funerary practices) after which two or three students will give a presentation on the same theme. Although the subjects will be decided, there is enough freedom to choose themes that bridge Art Sciences and Archaeology and give room to creativity. Each group of students chooses a paper that covers the topic of the presentation, which will be discussed afterwards. Each student will provide a point for discussion about the presented topic.

The following measure applies for (working) students who cannot attend class:

After each class, the students write a short reflection (~ 500 words). This reflection contains a reaction on the presentation of their fellow students in which the discussion topic of choice is discussed. These assignments should be submitted to the teacher no later than three days after the presentation has taken place. The presentation must take place before submitting the reflection. Practical issues can be discusses in consultation with the teacher.
