This course unit offers an introduction to the history of Western music with a great focus on music theater and more specifically on the operas of W.A. Mozart. Three opera performances will be also attended at the Royal Opera La Monnaie in Brussels, in paricular Mozart's big trilogy: Don Giovanni, Le Nozze di Figaro and Cosi fan tutte. Compositional developments, key genres and representative works are embedded in the history of art and culture through three loci for musical production and reception: monastery/church, court and city.
The course text, program brochures of the opera performances of the Royal Opera La Monnaie and listening examples are made available free of cherge via the digital learning platform Canvas. The opera performances are offered at a preferential rate by the Royal Opera La Monnaie at a rate of € 20 per performance.
The student gains insights into important periods in the history of Western music.

Explanation: Four questions: two synthesizing overvieuw questions (6 pts each) about the syllabus and lectures, one question about the visited opera performances (6pts.) And one (2pts.) about a listening example.
