Offer 2 with catalog number 1020915BER for all students in the 1st semester at a (B) Bachelor - advanced level.
The domain of the applied arts is particularly large. Because it is impossible to discuss every discipline in every style period, we have to make choices. Therefore, emphasis is mainly -but not exclusively- placed on furniture as the main element of the interior in the different consecutive style periods. The lessons consist of two large sections:
1) The typology of bourgeois furniture - In this part the classification of the bourgeois furniture is taught and the student learns the most important types and their specific names.
2) An overview of the large -dominant- style periods - this section gives an overview of the stylistic periods from the Middle Ages up to and including the Art Deco period.
In this part a summary of the style periods is given within a political, social and economic context from the Middle Ages to the Art Deco period. The course includes an exercise on furniture typology. Each student will receive a set of photos of furniture with instructions via the Canvas platform. The subject matter must be applied to these pictures. The exercise will not be graded. However, it is compulsory. Without having made the exercise, the student cannot take the exam. The exercise must be submitted at the latest at midnight on the Friday preceding the Christmas holidays.
A visit to a museum or exhibition will be organised after the lessons. The date will be determined in consultation with the students.
In order to follow this course part, the following costs are compulsory and additional to the invoice you received as a student from the Student Administration Centre. For visits a minimum amount of €30 is required. The costs are borne by the student and cannot be recovered from the fellow students, the lecturer or the faculty. The amounts are approximations that are as accurate as possible. If, as a result of these costs, you experience payment difficulties, you can contact the Student Social Services via sociale.dienst@vub.ac.be or +32 2 629 23 15. More information can also be found on https://my.vub.ac.be/studiefinanciering.
Visiting museums with applied arts collections where the student is confronted with the real objects is a particularly important aid when studying the course and is strongly recommended.
