Course Content

This course discusses the history of the Dutch language from the Indo-Germanic period to the present day. Both language-internal and language-external aspects will be discussed. Using original texts we will illustrate the historical, social and geographical evolution of Dutch. Special attention is given to "language history from below". This course lays the foundation for subsequent courses on philology, historical linguistics and language history.
A substantial part of the course consists of autonomous preparation of texts for the following lesson.
An assignment *may* be given that counts for a quarter of the final grade.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The students

-acquire an insight into the historical, social and geographical variation in the Dutch language

-acquire an insight into the development of Dutch from the Indo-Germanic period to the present day

-are able to read important historical texts and translate these into modern Dutch

-acquire the necessary knowledge and experience to be able to identify historical texts linguistically, geographically and chronologically based on linguistic characteristics

-acquire an insight into the most important elements of the external history of the Dutch language

-have an understanding of a number of fundamental linguistic changes that Dutch underwent.

-are able to carry out a partial study on the history of Dutch under guidance, and are able to report on this study in a high quality short paper.

-master Dutch at the academic level that may be expected from a Ba2 student

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
LEC Paper determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Oral Exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

Note: Read, translate and discuss language characteristics in read and unread texts.

Within the LEC Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Assignment with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Note: If an assignment was given, it accounts for 25% of the final grade.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Oral examination: discussion of aspects of the course contents.
In case an assignment was given, this counts for a quarter of the final grade.

The partial result of the paper will be transferred to the second exam session, if this result was 10/20 or higher. Students wishing to submit a new version of the paper send an email to the course titular (with the new paper) at the very latest before the start of the second exam session.
