Historical themes are treated (during six sessions): f.i. novels from the fin de siècle or poetry and prose of vitalism.
During the (four) analysis sessions narratological concepts and reading methods such as close reading & isotopical reading are learned. Two sessions will be devoted to written assignments.
This course is taught in Dutch. The students receive hand-outs and powerpoints, and take notes during class.
For each course, students must prepare texts and secondary literature in connection with the texts and methods discussed.
For the required literature there is a reader in which primary texts and secondary literature concerning the discussed texts and methods is foreseen. Summative list of terms will be provided.
- The student is able to independently interpret texts presented to him or her and has general insight into the authors and periods studied.
- He or she also has insight into the connection between the texts and their context, and into the structure of the works/series/collections.
- In analyzing the individual texts, the student is able to apply the primary methods for analyzing texts and to explain the proper terms used.
- Additional excercises teach students to find secondary literature and to write analyses in which they can demonstrate that they can discuss texts and situate them in the context of their creation.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 25% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 75% of the final mark.

All written assignments must be submitted by students if they wish to sit the oral examination.
