Course Content

The course consists of two modules:

A. GRAMMAIRE NORMATIVE II (WPO, semester 1 + 2, 35h) :

This course consists of the revision and further exploration of more complex aspects of the normative grammar of French. The student adequately applies the grammatical rules exposed in Grammaire normative I and Grammaire normative II in exercises but also justifies his answers, which demands a greater metalinguistic knowledge.

The practical seminar alternates short theoretical overviews with exercises.

B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE II (HOC, semester 2, 22 hours) :

Introduction to the historic linguistics of French: external and internal history of French.
The different components of language description: phonology, morphology, lexicology, syntax, semantics and discourse analysis.
The students prepare a presentation about central concepts and/or theories of contemporary French linguistics (team work).

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

A. GRAMMAIRE NORMATIVE II:

The students can correctly apply the more complex rules of French normative grammar and can justify their answers.

B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE II:

The students have an overview of the historic linguistics of French and know the central external and internal factors for its variation.
The students have an overview of the different viewing points from which the French language can be studied.
The student masters the central concepts of French linguistics exposed during the lectures.
The students show the capacity to prepare a presentation about central concepts and/or theories of contemporary French linguistics (team work).

The different components of language description: phonology, morphology, lexicology, syntax, semantics and discourse analysis.
The students prepare a presentation about central concepts and/or theories of contemporary French linguistics (team work).
The students are aware of their own mastery of the French language and of the register they use, during the lectures and the oral exam.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
LEC Teamwork determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Mond. exam. Ling. franç. II with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Schriftelijk examen GN II with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the LEC Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:

presentatie Ling. franç. II with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

A. GRAMMAIRE NORMATIVE II:

Permanent evaluation (50% of the final grade):

The progress of the student is assessed during the two semesters by intermediate tests.

The participation to these intermediate tests gives the student the prospect to be exempted of the final written exam, if he/ she obtains an average result of 14/20 for theses intermediates tests. The students who do not receive this exemption will participate to the final written exam of Grammaire normative II.

B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE II (40% + 10% of the final grade)

Oral Exam (40% of the final grade)
Presentation, team work (10% of the final grade)
- The students prepare a group presentation about central concepts and/or theories of contemporary French linguistics. If a student does not participate in this group presentation, he/ she will prepare an individual paper for the second exam period.
- All students partike in the oral exam and the group presentation

Additional information:

The final grade of this course is the sum of the grades obtained for both modules (WPO Grammaire normative II and lectures Linguistique française II), provided that these two grades are not lower than 08/20. If this is the case for one of the grades, the final grade will also be lower than a 08/20, whatever the other grade is.
Absence for one of the three compulsory evaluations results in an absence for the final grade.
A partial result of 14/20 or higher is transferred to the second exam period. If the student still wants to participate to the partial evaluations in order to replace this partial result, he needs to send an email to the Professor before the start of the second exam period.
Once a student has notified his / her wish to participate to the second evaluation in August/September in order to replace a partial result, he/ she irrevocably loses this partial result.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
