Course Content

The purpose of the course is to give a scientific and critical description of a number of linguistics aspects of Modern French.
The course deals with the different aspects of morpho-syntax of Modern French.
The students will acquire the essential notions to study a living language (words, group of words, sentence, the diverse grammatical categories etc.).
The course aims also at the bringing out of the errors of the traditional grammars.

Content. A. Lectures a) in-depth description of the morpho-syntactic functioning of modern French; b) presentation of the linguistic concepts essential to the grammatical analysis of French; Through the study of various points, the deficiencies of the traditional grammars will be highlichted. B. Exercises Grammatical analysis exercises: word classes, functions and types of propositions.

General competencies

The students must be able to
     a) consult and interpret the descriptive grammars of Contemporary Modern French;
     b) analyze and explain a grammatical item independently;
     c) to analyze the sentence at the level of functions and word classes;
     d) to have a critical attitude towards grammatical terminology and the standard of 'bon usage'

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
