Om Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse letterkunde na 1945 te kunnen opnemen, moet je geslaagd zijn voor Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse letterkunde: 1850-1945, of dit vak tenminste opnieuw registreren. Geef steeds voorrang aan vakken uit de laagste fase van je opleiding. Als je een verkort programma volgt, kan je dit vak zo opnemen.

Course Content

1. Analysis and historical overview of the five most important modernist writers: Reve, Hermans, Mulisch, Claus, and Boon, and of their work’s context. Attention is also paid to the prose experiments of the fifties and early sixties, and to existentialist prose.
2. Poetry experiments of the fifties and sixties.

Additional info

Hand-outs are available for the historical overview, to be completed by the students with notes. A digital syllabus with copies of poetical texts and a selection of articles is available for the students. In addition, a reading list containing a selection of the novels and poems of the covered authors has been made.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

– Through this course, the student gains knowledge of the most important poetical developments in Dutch literature after 1945. He/she is familiar with the works of the most important modernists and experimental authors.
- The student also has insight in lyrical analysis and prose analysis (narrator, focalisation, consciousness proposals, space/time, etc.), and he/she can apply this to arbitrary text (fragments).
- In addition, he / she is able to formulate a problem, and to independently find and critically assimilate responsible secondary literature.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral Exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

    Note: Oral examination with written preparation (> 15 minuten). The student must obtain the half of the points for this oral examination in order to succeed. Students will not be able to pass the exam if they do not have a thorough command of standard Dutch. The written preparation serves as no more than an aid for the students. They will be asked to submit the unaltered preparation at the end of the exam, but this document will not be accorded a grade.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Paper with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

    Note: The student must obtain the half of the points for the paper in order to get through.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Continuous evaluation with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Only for the second examination period the permanent evaluation is replaced by a written task. Tasks for the second examination period must be handed in before 31st of July. 

In a study manual provided by the lecturer at the start of the semester, the evaluation is detailed in a binding way.
