Course Content

This course focuses on genre and media innovation in literature in English, with an emphasis on late nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature. It studies how literary authors renew or combine genres; how they develop new writing styles; and write for ‘other’ media such as radio and film.

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

1. Students have in-depth knowledge of a specific area of expertise, i.e. late-nineteenth and twentieth-century literature in English (selected authors and texts).

2. Students have insight in genre and media developments; they understand how literature relates to media.

3. Students are able to analyse literary texts critically, especially with regard to genre and media innovation.

4. Students are able to communicate their analysis in academic English.

 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 80 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Participation with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

If the student is late or absent for a particular part, they obtain 0/20 for this specific part.
In case the student fails the course, the student will need to retake all the exam parts for which they failed. If the student fails the 'participation’ part, they will need to submit a short paper.
The same tasks, deadlines and evaluation methods apply to all students.
Plagiarism is strictly forbidden.
