Students must have taken 'Identities in Literature in English', before they can enroll in this course. Enrolling in Genre and Media Innovation means that you simultaneously take 'Literatuur en intermedialiteit' or have succesfully passed it. If you are enrolled in a preparatory programme you can register this course without restrictions.

Course Content

This course focuses on genre and media innovation in literature in English, with an emphasis on literature from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It studies how literary authors innovate or combine genres, develop new writing styles and write for 'new' media such as radio and film.

This course is taught in English. A reading list will be made available on Canvas before the start of the course. It is essential that students read the texts ahead of class and participate in the class discussions. 

 

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

1. Students have in-depth knowledge of a specific field of study, namely late nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature in English (selected authors and texts). 

2. Students have insight in genre and media developments in literature in English. 

3. Students are able to analyse literary texts critically and independently, especially with regard to genre and media innovation. 

4. Students are able to communicate their insights in English and in an academically appropriate style.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Mondeling with a relative weight of 80 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Participatie with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

In the second exam session, the format and weight of the exam and participation may differ. 

In case the student is late or absent for a compulsory part, they will receive 0/20 for this specific part.

The same tasks, deadlines and evaluation methods apply to all students.
