This course focuses on genre and media innovation in literature in English, with an emphasis on literature from the late nineteenth, twentieth, and/or twenty-first centuries. It studies how literary authors innovate or combine genres, develop new writing styles and write for 'new' media such as radio and film.
This course is taught in English.
A reading list will be made available on Canvas before the start of the course. It is essential that students prepare for class by reading the assigned texts ahead of time and that they participate in the class discussions.
The course is taught alternately by Prof. Birgit Van Puymbroeck and Prof. Janine Hauthal. The content may vary from year to year, with a focus on modernist or postmodernist texts depending on the year. It is possible that some classes are taught by guest lecturers.
1. Students have in-depth knowledge of a specific field of study, namely modernist and/or postmodernist literature in English (selected authors and texts).
2. Students have insight in genre and media developments in literature in English.
3. Students are able to analyse literary texts critically and independently, especially with regard to genre and media innovation.
4. Students are able to communicate their insights in correct academic English.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
