Course Content

The lecture (HOC) focuses on the relations between literature and the other artistic expression forms, especially in the 20th century.

For the practical part (SELF), the student prepares a paper, which is related to the methodology and the content of the lecture.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

- The students acquire a knowledge of the evolution of French literature, mainly in the 20th century.

- The students have an insight in the interaction between literature and the other arts, mainly in the 20th century.

- The students are able to recognize the intermedial characteristics in literature which were discussed in the texts read during the lecture.

- The students can situate the most important events in French Literary History

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Oral examination with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Note: At the oral final exam students are expected to be able to illustrate the characteristics of the movement and authors we studied on the basis of the texts read and discussed in class.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Paper with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Note: Students write a paper about a literary movement or a text and present it in class orally.

Information regarding evaluation :

The final grade is composed based on the two following categories:

1. An Oral Examination (70% of the final mark)

- An oral examination consisting of main questions and additional questions.

- All the chapters of the syllabus will be investigated.

These questions are, of course, knowledge questions. But insight is also tested by asking for additional explanations (e.g. transposing into one's own words). As well as application, because not only examples are requested to confirm the acquired knowledge and insight, but also because the language proficiency (French) contributes to a large extent.

2. A Paper (30% of the final mark)

The paper is submitted before the beginning of the examinationperiod and discussed during the oral exam.

Additional information regarding evaluation :

- Students must participate in both parts of the evaluation in order to obtain a pass mark for the whole course.

- Students have to succeed in both parts of the evaluation process to obtain a pass mark for the whole course.

- Students who fail to participate in both parts of the evaluation process automatically are marked as « absent ».

- Students can transfer to the next exam session the results of those parts of the evaluation process for which they have obtained a pass mark.

- The level of the French proficiency is the level that is determined by TALK for the third Bachelor in French.
