This course focuses on the historical developments in the modern times of the long 19th century, taking the genre of the novella (short story) as its point of departure. Attention is paid to the evolution of the novella as a genre during that period, and to the interaction of that genre with the tension between revolution and restauration that especially in the German and Austrian regions has characterised the 19th century.
Each week the students get some concrete questions in advance for the next session. They prepare these questions so as to facilitatie interaction. Attendance of the lessons is therefore obligatory.
The students write a short essay of at least 1500 words on one of the discussed novellas, starting from a concrete research question, and with references to at least one scientific source in print from the VUB library and to at least one scientific website. They submit this paper in the second last week and get individual feedback in the last week of the term, with the chance to rework the essay in case they failed.
The students:
- can understand the developments of the genre of the novella in the 19th century and early 20th centuries.
- can find and use secondary material.
- can use scientific instruments and terminology.
- can write a short paper using scientific sources.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 30% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 30% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 40% of the final mark.

The weekly preparation and participation is considered as formative evaluation.
The writing of the paper is considered both as formative and summative evaluation.
The exam component "short paper" cannot be transferred to the second exam period. The results for this exam component are transferred to the second exam period.
The students have to pass all exam categories in order to pass the exam as a whole.
