Course Content

The broad subject of this course is the philosophy of language, which deals with the relationship between language (users) and the world, from a more analytical as well as a continental perspective. The following related topics, currents and thinkers, among others, will be discussed: Semantics (Frege / Russell), pragmatics (Austin / Grice), knowledge (Goldman / Gettier), computer science (Floridi), truth (Tarski / Dummett), semiotics (Peirce / De Saussure), Phenomenology (Husserl / Merleau-Ponty), hermeneutics (Heidegger / Gadamer), postmodernism (Derrida / Lyotard / Foucault) and critical theory (Adorno / Habermas). In addition, or parallel to this, the self-study of primary reading is also on the programme, i.e. the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (Wittgenstein).
