Course Content
This course offers an introduction to applied linguistics, an academic discipline in which attention is paid to questions concerning language and communication in society. The course is structured around two main themes that are central to the applied linguistics bachelor's programme: language education and multilingual communication. 
 
Examples of topics within the broad theme of language education are: language acquisition and proficiency, language testing, language learning strategies or multilingual education. Within the broad theme of multilingual communication, subjects are covered such as multilingual communication strategies, multilingual language policies, translation or interpreting. Specific questions related to these themes are discussed with reference to theoretical tenets, research and practice.

1. the student can recognise, define and illustrate key concepts from the covered (sub)domains in applied linguistics by means of examples;
2. the student can identify central issues within the research domains that have been addressed, broadly interpret and illustrate these by means of his own selected examples;
3. the student can explain in his own words theoretical tenets or principles that are related to the selected topics (e.g. principles of language acquistion, language learning strategies, language testing, multilingual communication, etc.), apply these principles to real-life situations and critically reflect on these principles;
4. the student is able to expand his knowledge on one or more of his own chosen topics or fields that are related to applied linguistics;
5. the student is able to communicate his acquired insights in an appropriate and clear way, both in written and spoken form;

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

The report consists of a written assignment with open reflection questions related tot the content of the lectures.
