In Nederlands: communicatieve vaardigheden I, students work on a number of foundation skills regarding written and oral proficiency in Dutch. The students learn to analyse the structure, coherence and style of texts. They furthermore receive training in pronunciation, spelling and the usage of lexicographic reference works. These skills are developed against the backdrop of scientific theorizing on linguistic norms and language variation.

- Students can discuss the role of linguistic norms and linguistic variation in relation to the theoretical and practical topics covered in this course.
- Students can discuss the features and functions of the lexicographic reference words discussed in the course and can independently use these resources.
- Students have a perfect mastery of Dutch spelling and can explain the principles of the Dutch spelling system as well as its historical development in their own words.
- Students can analyse and evaluate the structure, coherence and style of an unseen text and revise these elements accordingly.
- Students can describe and apply the topics in articulatory phonetics covered in the course in theoretical exercises as well as apply them in their own Standard Dutch pronunciation.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.

In order to pass this course, the student has to participate in all (evaluation) activities and hand in all assigments relating to the 'verdiepende studietraject'. The written exam has two parts, one in January and one in June.
