Course Content

The student acquires skills necessary to effectively and accurately communicate in German across various contexts, thematic domains, text types, and registers. The practice-oriented explanations and exercises focus on the student’s receptive skills (reading, listening, and comprehension) and productive skills (speaking and writing).

Final Competences

  • The students develop and extend their knowledge of the vocabulary, expressions, stylistic characteristics and grammatical structures characteristic of the various domains, registers, and text types of specific communication. [Knowledge]
  • Students can read, understand and analyse texts from various specific contexts in German. This implies that they can summarize their content and rephrase the most important arguments. [Assessment, Insight, Communication]
  • The students show, in a series of exercises, that they can also practically use these communicative tools and knowledge, both written and spoken, in a fluid, efficient and effective way. [Applying knowledge and insight]

Objectives

The students acquire skills to effectively and correctly engage in German language communication across various contexts and for different purposes.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen schriftelijk with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

    Note: Written Exam with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen andere with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

    Note: Mandatory writing assignments and possible speaking assignments throughout the semester (continuous assessment) with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

A student cannot pass this course if he/she scores less than 10/20 for (1) the written exam and/or (2) the continuous assessment (= mandatory writing assignments and possible speaking assignments throughout the semester). Assignments for which a failing grade is received must be retaken during the second exam period.

Failure to submit one or more mandatory assignments or submitting them late without the instructor's approval will result in a failing grade for the 'continuous assessment' component.

The use of generative AI is prohibited in both the written exam and the continuous assessment assignments. Non-compliance with this prohibition is considered academic fraud and will be penalized.
