Course Content

This course offers students an introduction to the language and culture of the Dutch-speaking Low Countries. The course is made up of two parts:

Part 1: Dutch language and culture in context

During the first part we consider a number of relevant themes related to the Dutch language and culture in a broader social context. Precise themes may vary annually - e.g. Inclusion and inclusive language use; Language policy and the Dutch Language Union; Education and the role of English; etc. After a general introduction, the lectures are set up interactively, and socially relevant themes and relevant cases are the topic of debate in class.

Part 2: Referrals students

In the second part of the lecture, students themselves give a presentation in which they discuss a predetermined topic within Dutch culture and/or a relevant related case study. Attendance and active participation in class is required.

Objectives

1. Students can describe, compare and situate some relevant themes related to the study of the Dutch language and culture in its contemporary context. [Dublin descriptor NVAO: knowledge and insight].
2. The students can test and illustrate some important themes in Dutch language and culture using case studies and examples discussed in lectures or in literature. [Dublin descriptor NVAO: apply knowledge and insight].
3. Students are able to deepen and broaden their knowledge of current themes in Flanders and Dutch Studies through independent reading of relevant (scientific) literature. [Dublin descriptor NVAO: learning skills].
4. Students are able to set up and carry out a relatively limited literature review on a specified topic within the area of Flemish and Dutch Studies. [Dublin descriptor NVAO: learning skills + applying knowledge and insight].
5. Students can report on their independent reading in a clear and appropriate way by means of a reference and a prepared debate. They can express themselves fluently in Standard Dutch and make correct use of relevant subject terminology. [Dublin descriptor NVAO: communication]

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
PRAC Presentation determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written examen with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

  • Presentation with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

    Note: Fysieke of digitale presentatie. Actieve participatie tijdens de colleges en lectuur van de opgegeven literatuur kunnen ook voor het deelcijfer van het referaat in rekening worden gebracht (± 20% van het deelcijfer).

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students who do not participate in one component of the evaluation will receive a 0/20 as a partial grade for that component.

Partial grades may be transferred to a later session within the same academic year upon written request (prior to the examination period) by the student.

Participation may be taken into account for the final grade, in the form of a correction +1 or +2 out of 20 for good or exceptionally good participation, and in the form of a correction -1 or -2 out of 20 for weak or exceptionally weak participation.

Generative AI can be used in a responsible way to aid in the preparation for the presentation. Any use of generative AI should be properly referenced.
