This course offers a history of culture and focusses more specifically on modernity in France and its neighbouring countries. Students prepare episodes of 18th, 19th or 20th centuries by means of chapters written by Gérard Noiriel, Philippe Aries, Gita Deneckere and others. Bibliography is in French or French translation. A number of examples of potential exam questions and cases are offered - these are not exhaustive - as well as short modules af Academic Writing in French. Furthermore, the lecturer explores the historical periods by means of narrative fragments. Specific attention goes to the representation of historical episodes as well as the domestic and foreign history of France. In addition to the presentation about a current affair, the students prepare two questions for the written exam for which they need to consult the sources of the syllabus. At the ens of this course the students know how integrate their achievements in French in the past two years and how to perpetuate and expand them in an independant manner.
Theory and literature will be available in VUBtiek and on Canvas at the start of the academic year. Movies at disposal or at good rates available online in archives or shops.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 30% of the final mark.

Sitting time 1
- Permanent assessment of cultural history, oral and written: preparation for contact moments through two to three hours of reading: 2 credits
- Self-study political history, history of mentality: written exam: 2 credits
- Prepare two questions with a literature and film list for the written exam with bibliography and texts in the syllabus: 2 credits
This examination formula is not possible for working students, nor for students who follow course units that overlap.
Sitting time 2
To compensate for the absence of some students from continuous assessment, an oral exam is provided in these specific cases for 2 credits. With questions about French political and cultural history and the reading material during the lectures.
