Course Content

The course 'Introduction to Journalism' familiarizes students with different perspectives within the domain of journalism studies. Students acquire a frame of reference for studying journalism based on 'classic' and recent theoretic insights and empirical research situated at the intersection of communication sciences, sociology and linguistics. The course focuses on journalism in practice (production, product or 'text', reception) situated within the wider political-economic and social context. In this course we look at central approaches and concepts such as normative theories of the press, history of the press, media ownership and media concentration, gatekeeping, news values, and framing.

Learning Outcomes

Objectives

Students have insight into the different facets of journalism in practice (process and product). They know the main approaches and theories within the domain of 'journalism studies'. Based on this frame of reference they are able to form a critical opinion about the functioning and role of journalism within a wider social context.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Closed book exam with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

    Note: Closed Book Exam.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Group presentation + paper with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Note: Students prepare a presentation in small groups. The students must rework this presentation into an academic paper. Students will receive a final mark as a group for their presentation and paper.
Second Session: transfer of the group mark (is possible) if students passed the group assignment in the first session. If students failed the group assignment in first session, this will be replaced with an individual assignment in the second session.
