Course Content

This course constitutes the final building block of your English-Dutch translation trajectory in the Bachelor programme. In these practical seminars, we will continue to focus on translation as a goal-oriented activity, since we always translate "for someone" and "with a certain goal in mind" (Vanderbauwhede & Henn, 2019, p.330). A successful translation mediates the linguistic and cultural distance between source audience/source context on the one hand and target audience/target context on the other, and this process can in turn be informed by the desired communicative goal. In addition to translating and revising texts, we will also spend some time on text adaptation, required when the genre, context, target audience and/or communicative purpose of the target text differs from that of the source text. Most of the assignments will involve translation from English into Dutch, but a few will target inverse translation (NL > E).

We will frequently focus on the translation of so-called 'cultural texts', meaning that you should be able to practically apply some of the institutional, historical, and cultural knowledge gained in English: Language and Culture. You will also be able to sample three domains in translation that will be foregrounded in the master's in translation, namely literary, technical-scientific and economic translation.
