This course introduces students to a wide range of approaches and methods in literary studies and linguistics. After a few introductory sessions, students are introduced to a series of approaches in literary studies, grouped under the headings of formalist, historicist, political and psychoanalytical approaches. They learn how to make surveys, conduct interviews and analyse data statistically, and are introduced to various methods in psycholinguistics.
This course is taught in English.
1. Students are familiar with different approaches and methods in literary studies and linguistics.
2. Students can find and assess scientific articles in the fields of literary studies and linguistics.
3. Students are able to identify and critically analyse the method used in scientific articles in literary studies and linguistics.
4. Students are able to argue why a certain method is or is not suitable for a certain type of research.
5. Students are able to apply a selection of methods to their own research.
6. Students are able to reflect on scientific methods and their applications in academic English.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
If the student submits an assignment late, they will receive 0/20 for that assignment.
If the student fails the course, they must retake all the sections for which they failed.
If the student fails the reflection paper (linguistics and/or literary studies), they must rework and resubmit the reflection paper.
The same assignments, deadlines and evaluation methods apply to all students.
