In this course we read original modern and contemporary moral philosophical texts. After reading them the texts are analyzed and contextualized. The students learn to use the philosophical terminology and concepts correctly. During the course they conduct discussions on the content of the texts.
Examples:
David Hume: the moral sentiments; John Stuart Mill: pleasure as the basis of ethics and the value of individuality; Immanuel Kant: the good will and the categorical imperative; Friedrich Nietzsche: aristocratic and slave morality; Hans Jonas: responsibility for humans and nature; John Rawls: justice in a pluralistic society; Jürgen Habermas: the discourse ethics of a democratic society; Peter Singer: the moral status of animals; Martha Nussbaum: the capabilities approach and human dvelopment.
A reader will be available by the beginning of the course.
1. knowledge history of ethics; 2. learn to use the philosophical terminology and concepts correctly; 3. learn to analyze and contextualize philosophical texts; 4. conduct discussions on the content of the texts; 5. develop an open critical attitude.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
