This course integrates findings from such diverse fields of science as philosophy, anthropology and psychology. The inquiry focuses on how people attempt to give meaning to their lives from a humanistic, cultural-naturalistic perspective. In a first section, we explore why people desire meaning and sense, how these meanings are found or created, and what form they take. Authors used are primarily Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, John Dewey and Mark Johnson. For the first part, we read 'De zinnen van het leven. Of de kunst van het verstaan'. The second part focuses on the question of meaning and religion. How can we see religion as a source of meaning in a humanistic and pluralistic framework. We study the work of Richard Rorty and Gianni Vattimo. For this second part, we read 'Religie na de dood van god. Een conversatie'. The two books used are writtenby the titular author of this course.
