Inhoud

This course aims to provide an integrated overview of the history of China from Prehistory until the fall of the last imperial dynasty, the Qing Dynasty. On the one hand, we will draw a panoramic sketch of different historical periods in chronological order. On the other hand, we will zoom in on certain aspects of each period to better understand the important historical developments and its contribution to the Chinese historical identity. Some highlights include the emergence and the origin of Chinese philosophy during the Eastern Zhou era, the introduction of Buddhism, the culmination of culture and art during the Han, Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties, and the first contacts with the West. The main objective is to gain a comprehensive yet structured historical overview that emphasizes the cultural evolution of China, the historical sensitivities and identity of its society.

Students who complete this course will be able to

· Have a general overview of Chinese history, including major historical events and significant developments

· Understand the cultural context in which Chinese history takes place

· Understand the link between historical developments and their broader cultural context

· Gain a general understanding of the main philosophical schools, their tenets and lasting influence on the formation of Chinese thinking

· Reflect on cultural differences between East and West based on historical insight.

Beoordelingsinformatie

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Mondeling bepaalt 60% van het eindcijfer

ZELF Presentatie bepaalt 40% van het eindcijfer

Binnen de categorie Examen Mondeling dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Mondeling examen met een wegingsfactor 60 en aldus 60% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Het mondeling examen heeft betrekking op de inhoud van de cursus en de brede historische en culturele inzichten die de student in deze cursus dient te verwerven.

Binnen de categorie ZELF Presentatie dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Presentatie met een wegingsfactor 40 en aldus 40% van het totale eindcijfer.
