Course Content

The course is chronological/thematic in structure and has an introductory character. The first part will focus on the genesis of the principalities of the Low Countries and on the political unification of those principalities under the Burgundian-Habsburg state (11th-16th c.) In the second part, the divergent political, socio-economic and national developments in the Northern and Southern Netherlands Low Countries are discussed (17th-early 19th centuries).

General competencies

At the end of the course students should have an understanding of the major thrust of the socio-economic and, political history of the Low Countries from the Middle Ages until 1830.
