Course Content

In the course Human Resource Management students develop a general understanding of how human resource decisions contribute to individual, team, and organizational effectiveness, and to a firm’s sustained competitive advantage. This knowledge can be applied in small, medium, and large firms, as well as non-profits. The course covers topics such as:

  • The historical background of HRM,
  • HR roles,
  • Strategic HRM (SHRM),
  • Job analysis and competency modeling,
  • Recruitment and employer branding,
  • Personnel selection and assessment,
  • Performance appraisal and management,
  • Compensation,
  • Employee well-being.

The course approaches the management of human resources from a strategic perspective. The strategic perspective describes how each of the basic HR functions has its own part within the overall strategic plan of the organization and contributes to organizational performance. The course further takes an evidence-based approach to HRM which aims to help students in developing critical judgment in making decisions that impact the well-being and performance of organizations and employees.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 90 which comprises 90% of the final mark.

Note: Knowledge, understanding and insight are tested during the exam. The exam consists mainly of multiple-choice questions.
  • Individual Paper with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

(!) In accordance with the supplementary faculty regulations to article 8§3 of the Teaching and Examination Regulations, the examination in the first examination session for all students only takes place in the additional examination block, organized in the two weeks following the spring break.

Evaluation 1st session:

  • Written Exam. The written exam represents 90% of the total grade. The exam tests students' knowledge and understanding of the course material (syllabus). The exam consists of multiple-choice questions. A "higher caesura" is applied to compensate for questions that students answer correctly by guessing. When the higher caesura is applied, students will not lose points if they answer a multiple-choice question incorrectly, but must answer more than the traditional 50% of the questions correctly to pass the exam. Depending on the number of students, the catch-up exam may take a different format (e.g., written exam with open-ended questions).
  • Individual assignment. The individual task represents 10% of the total grade. Students must write an individual paper reflecting their own knowledge, skills, abilities (and other characteristics) based on the results of various self-assessments. They do this from the point of view of employer and employee. If the assignment is not submitted or after the due date, the grade for this section will be zero.

Evaluation 2nd session:

The grade from the first session is carried over to the second session. There is no possibility to retake the assignment.
