Course Content

In this course, students learn how both classic and social psychological principles are applied in the field of media and social media, and how media and the society are mutually dependent.

Topics discussed in this course may include:

  • Adolescents and the media
  • Advantages and risks of internet
  • Selfpresentation and internet
  • Social perception and internet
  • Changing attitudes and the media
  • Media violence
  • Prosocial behavior and media

Learning Outcomes

General competences

  1. Develop critical reflections and analyses on the psychology and sociology of (social) media.
  2. Have understanding of the supporting disciplines, namely statistics and research methods and techniques, assess their importance and apply these in media sociological and psychological research.
  3. Being able to explain the associations between (social) media use and identity, wellbeing and online and offline health/risk behaviors
  4. Being able to describe and explain relevant theories in the field of psychology, media psychology and sociology that explain the abovementioned associations
  5. Being able to link psychological and sociological concepts, methodology and empirical findings with the role of (social) media and gender, family and society

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

The exam will be given on-campus, even if you have to do a retake. Under no conditions, the exam will be given online. Exchange students who are unable to come to Ghent in January (i.e. the moment that the exam will take place) or in August (retake) are advised against to follow this course.
