Course Content

This course provides business economics students with a basic understanding of the legal environment in which businesses operate.

First, the students will learn the basic concepts and structures of law and legal reasoning. In the second part, we explore the legal framework and principles that apply to businesses operating in the European Union market. After a brief introduction to European Union law, we will discuss various important fields of business law, such as competition law, consumer protection, data protection, intellectual property rights, and more. The last part of the course deals with business organisation law, with a particular focus on the rules governing companies established in the European Union.

Learning Outcomes

General Competences

Upon successful completion of this introductory course, students:

  • will have gained a basic understanding of (European) business law.
  • will be able to address basic legal issues, and evaluate potential legal risks associated with doing business in the European Union.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Note: The written exam is a “closed book” exam. Examples of questions will be provided during the lectures and will be available via the electronic learning platform.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The written exam will comprise 20 multiple-choice questions with four alternatives. It is scored using the “higher mark pass” as z correction mechanism. No marks are deducted for a wrong answer, but the pass or fail mark (the number of questions that must be answered correctly to get 10/20) will take into account the probability of guessing. This means that you must answer 12 questions correctly to pass the exam (although you should always aim for the highest score).

Students are allowed to use a reader during the exam. More details will be provided via Canvas.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
