In this module/course unit we will discuss the broad theme of the language industry, a sector characterised by a variety of activities aimed at facilitating multilingual (oral or written) communication. The module/course unit covers a variety of topics, each time highlighting different aspects of the language industry. For example, we will discuss how the language industry is structured by looking into the (types of) organisations active in this sector, the specific language services they provide, or the specific language products they develop. In addition, we will zoom in on examples of activities within this sector such as translation, interpreting, localisation, dubbing, transcreation, language training, etc. Other topics covered include specific language products, quality standards within the language industry, translation processes, project management workflows, language technology, etc. These topics are discussed with reference to current trends in both research and practice
Students receive feedback on their assignments during class or by appointment.
1. the student can recognise and define key concepts related to the language industry and illustrate these key concepts by means of examples ;
2. the student can identify central research issues within the domains that have been addressed, apply these issues to real-life situations and critically reflect on these issues;
3. the student is able to expand his or her knowledge on one or more chosen topics or fields that are related to the language industry;
4. the student is able to communicate his or her acquired insights in an appropriate and clear way, both in written and spoken form.
