Course Content

The course on European Union Decision-making and Law provides an overview of the different decision-making procedures of the EU and of its legal order. In this course, we will thus examine the structure and general principles of the EU legal order; the different instruments and procedures in terms of EU law-making; the evolution, nature and adoption of the EU's budget; the EU's economic governance; the different aspects and decision-making procedures of EU foreign policy; as well as the instruments allowing for differentiation within the EU.

The course consists of the six following modules:

  • Module 1: Introduction to EU decision-making and law
  • Module 2: Making and implementing EU legislation
  • Module 3: The EU's budget
  • Module 4: The EU's economic governance
  • Module 5: Govererning the EU's external relations
  • Module 6: Differentiation in the EU

The duration of the course is 12 weeks.

Learning Outcomes

General Competencies

After completing this module, students should be able to:

  • explain the structure and key principles underpinning the EU legal order;
  • explain the different decision-making procedures and tools in terms of EU law-making, budget, economic governance and foreign policy;
  • explain the nature of differentiation within the EU.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignments with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Each of the six modules comprises a lecture and reading materials. The students are given two weeks to finalise each module. Two separate assignments, counting in total for 50% of the final grade, will take place during this six modules. Upon the end of the six modules, the students take a final oral exam that counts for the remaining 50%. The final exam takes place online.
