Inhoud

This course on “European Public Policy Analysis” aims to provide students with the necessary tools to analyse core EU public policies in a variety of dimensions, from the economic to the social. It starts with a strong focus on economic integration, covering the EU’s internal market, trade and competition policies. Then the course moves on to analyse policy areas such as the digital single market, digital identity in Europe and segues into a discussion about industrial innovation in Europe.

The course aims to provide insight into a multiplicity of areas and modes of policymaking in the European Union, as well as their philosophical underpinnings. Throughout the course, students will monitor and discuss current events related to the topics studied and their inclusion (alongside the coursework assigned) is a necessary inclusion. By the end of the course, students will have a thorough understanding of the most important policies of the EU and should be able to critically evaluate their present and future impact on the everyday life of EU citizens.

The course consists of 6 modules. The course material mainly includes book chapters and articles, and on occasion, videos, infographics and official EU policy documents.

Module structure:

Module 1: Introduction to Public Policy Analysis

Module 2: Internal Market Policy

Module 3: Trade Policy

Assessment.

This module has a series of rolling deadlines (each of which are between 12 and 14 days after the launching of the module). Submissions are completed through an assignment dropbox on Canvas and special provisions can be made for students who are unable to complete particular assignments in time (this is predicated upon the necessity to communicate any delays to the instructor in advance).

Every module (save for Modules 1, which is an introduction to the syllabus and the individual modules) have an assignment component, each of which counts for 10% of the student’s overall grade (total 50%). At the end of the semester, there will also be a final assessment that comprises the final 50%. Feedback on assignments will be provided on a rolling basis so that students are aware of the course’s academic expectations and conventions in terms of citation and academic honesty (proper citation and avoiding AI-generated content).
