Course Content

Position of the Course:

The aim of the course is to give an in-depth overview of biomedical devices covering a large variety of sensors, comprising on body measurement systems, on exoskeletons, wearable sensor technologies, implantable sensing and drug deliverable devices, point of care diagnostics and stimulation devices. The course will also bring insights in the basic building blocks and functionalities of body area networks.

Content:

1. Biomedical Sensors:

- Global overview and general architectures: electrical, optical, mechanical, fluids, molecular

- On the body, wearables, on exoskeleton

- Inside the body

- Point-of-care including microfluidic systems

- Comparison of various body fluid sensor solutions

2. Stimulation devices

- Electrodes and Optrodes

- Electrostimulation generators: current, voltage, charge including organic electronic ion pumps

- Amplifier circuits

- Case studies: Cardiac pacemakers, Defibrillators

3. Drug delivery implants

- Micro-needle systems

- MEMS based systems

o Passive vs. active micropumps

o Continual delivery monitoring

- Intravenous drug deliverable systems

4. Electronic and Peripheral Components for implantable devices

- Electrodes, optrodes and transducers

- Inner structure of implantable devices

- Battery technologies vs charging technologies

- Communication system, including interfacing with consumer electronics

- Associated Electronic circuits

- Body sensor and body area networks

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Closed+oral open book exam with a relative weight of 75 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

    Note: During examination period: combination of closed and oral open book exam, written preparation.

    Calculation of the examination mark: During examination period / Throughout semester = 75% / 25%
  • Practical Lab session with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

    Note: During semester: 1 practical laboratory session
