Position of the Course:
The aim of the course is to give an in-depth overview of biomedical devices covering a large variety of sensors, comprising on body measurement systems, on exoskeletons, wearable sensor technologies, implantable sensing and drug deliverable devices, stimulation devices and point of care diagnostics, including microfluidic based medical devices. The course will also bring insights in the basic building blocks and functionalities of body area networks.
Content:
1. Biomedical Sensors:
- Global overview and general architectures: electrical, optical, mechanical, fluids, molecular
- Wearables
- Point-of-care including microfluidic systems
2. Stimulation devices
- Electrodes and Optrodes
- Electrostimulation generators: current, voltage, charge including organic electronic ion pumps
- Amplifier circuits
3. Drug delivery implants
- Micro-needle systems
- MEMS based systems
o Passive vs. active micropumps
o Continual delivery monitoring
- Intravenous drug deliverable systems
4. Electronic and Peripheral Components for implantable devices
- Electrodes, optrodes and transducers
- Inner structure of implantable devices
- Body sensor and body area networks
Case studies related to Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy.
5. Microfluidic based devices and fabrication technologies
