Course Content

The topics that are covered in the course are:

1) doctor-patient communication (starting with the communication problems experienced by the doctors themselves, and on specific topics including the provision of patient-oriented information, relaying ‘bad news’, and/or motivational conversations),

2) workplace communication: with colleagues and other caretakers (conference skills, giving feedback, consult), and

3) giving a presentation, for instance at an international conference

The content of the course is mainly about oral communication. The education contributes to the interuniversity-based learning outcomes of the master specialist medicine, which are relevant for this course.

Working forms:

We use a 'Blended' learning environment in which learning takes place alternately in the online learning environment (CANVAS), in lectures, in work sessions and on the basis of self-recorded video material. The entirety of the educational interventions is orchestrated from the online learning environment.

Teaching about specific communication topics such as the bad news conversation, communication with colleagues and/or giving a presentation is done in plenary sessions in lectures and in work sessions in groups of 20-25 students. In the work sessions the students are taught techniques to communicate better and they get the opportunity to practice in a role play, among other things. On CANVAS, students find a description of the preparation expected from them for each work session.
