Content “Case discussion”
During these sessions, practical cases are presented and (interdisciplinary) discussed in team. Attention is paid to emergencies and diagnostic problems. The subjects that are covered are those from the internships and relate to the final objectives as defined under “physician” level expert.
“Patient care”
The ASO is given the chance to practice a wide array of domains within the specialism during the education. During these internships, the ASO acquires specific knowledge and skills and applies these in practice.
Preferential internships during the education of Neurology are:
Admission department and stroke unit
Consultative neurology, including emergency neurology and neuro-intensive care
Polyclinic: general and specialist (headache, epilepsy, stroke, movement disorders, memory clinic, multiple sclerosis, neuro-oncology, neuromuscular syndromes)
Neurophysiology: EEG, 24h EEG, EMG, evoked potentials, central motoric conduction, doppler investigation neck- and transcranial blood vessels
Optional internships are the following:
Child neurology
Neurosurgery
Neuropathology
Neuroradiology
Internal Medicine
Psychiatry
WORKING METHODS
The final objectives are met in practice with:
Clinical meetings and protocol discussions (1-2h/week)
Bedside teaching (1-2h/week)
Problem-oriented patient discussion (1-2h/week)
Room tours (daily)
Supervised consultation (daily)
OLR 1: Has acquired profound medical knowledge and insights in the specialism (M, W).
OLR 3: Has further enhanced the problem-solving capacity and applies this in practice (M, W).
OLR 15: Takes into account the economic aspects of medicine and uses the available resources accordingly, avoiding under- and overuse (M).
OLR 18: Is capable of introducing “standards of care” and quality requirements with regard to the different aspects of formulating one’s own specialism (M, Ma).
OLR 4: Can communicate correctly with a patient and his/her environment in a humane and empathic way, taking into account the ethical, social and multicultural aspects (diversity) and within the relevant legislation (C)
OLR 16: Knows the principles of medical informatics for delivering optimal patient care and maintaining own expertise (M).
OLR 19: Satisfies the general and specific final objectives, inherent to the specialism, concerning diagnostics and syndromes/diseases (M, W).

Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Portfolio with performance interviews and assessment interview at the end, level expert (100%).
