Course Content

This course aims to continue the acquisition of more specialised medical knowledge, to develop problem solving capacity and to apply it in practice.

The trainee gains basic knowledge in a broad number of fields within the speciality necessary for the applications in practice. The content that will be dealt with, is related to the learning outcomes. The trainee functions with increasing independency in an environment of increasing complexity that is evidence based. We aim for the "scope of knowledge" defind by the European examination Board in Otorhinolaryngology (http://www.ebeorl-hns.org/index.asp?
seccion=3&apartado=10).
We expect the ASO to function with increasing independence and be able to handle more complex cases in an evidence based way.

Additional info
Based on the “scope of knowledge” of the European Examination Board in Otorhinolaryngology, a syllabus is made available to the ASO, with references to the handbook and knowledge clips for self-study and to available courses. In addition, follow-up days are organized per subdiscipline (otology, rhinology, head and neck surgery) on which the ASO is obliged to be present. During these days, the subject matter is further explored through question lectures, interactive lessons or workshops.

The student passes the course when he passes the European oral exam. This exam is taken at the end of year 4. In case of fail (or if the student  retakes the written exam in year 4), the student can take the European oral exam in year 5. In case of failure of the oral exam in year 5, or in case of non-participation in the European oral exam due to force majeure, a Flemish interuniversity catch-up exam will be organised.

In preparation of the exams we advise to use the following: “Key topics in Otolaryngology” van Roland et al., online modules and content of the teaching days.
