Case discussions
During these sessions, the practical cases are presented and discussed in team (multidisciplinary). The topics that are covered are also dealt with during internships and relate to the final objectives as defined under “physician” level 2.
Patient care and medical-technical skills
The ASO is given the chance to exercise a wide array of domains within the specialism during the education. During these internships, the ASO acquires the below-mentioned specific knowledge and skills and applies these in daily practice.
During these internships in autopsy-, histo- and cytopathology, the ASO acquires enough background knowledge to understand and conduct the techniques that are used within this specialism (e.g. histochemistry, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology…)
The ASO acquires skills in peroperatory and emergency diagnostics
The procedural skills that are dealt with compose of the final objectives of level 2 and are mentioned in the file under “specialization pathological anatomy, department VIII: program level 2”.
The ASO is to operate with increasing autonomy and complexity, in a scientifically founded manner.

The ASO is actively involved concerning the technical laboratory, including control of the pre-analytical phase and validation of produced results (post-analytical phase). He/she remains critical and complements the practical knowledge by learning background theory from the different sources of information that are provided.

OLR 16: Knows the principles of medical informatics for delivering optimal patient care and maintaining own expertise (M).
OLR 17: Keeps further developing and improving own skills.
OLR 18: Is capable of introducing “standards of care” and quality requirements with regard to the different aspects of formulating one’s own specialism (M, Ma).
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Portfolio with performance interview with a relative weight of 1 and hence 50% of the final mark
Exam with a relative weight of 1 and hence 50% of the final mark
Exam elucidation: the candidate receives approximately 10 cases to solve. The student is allowed to prepare oneself (with access to textbooks) and then discusses the cases at the 7-head microscope in presence of the jury. The jury is composed of all accredited pathologists of the department with an academic mandate.
