25 ECTS credits
750 h study time
Offer 1 with catalog number 6021865FNR for all students in the 1st and 2nd semester at a (F) Master - specialised level.
Case discussions
During these sessions, the practical cases are presented and discussed in team (multidisciplinary). The topics that are covered are also dealt with during internships and relate to the final objectives as defined under “physician” level 3.
Patient care and medical-technical skills
The ASO is given the chance to exercise a wide array of domains within the specialism during the education. During these internships, the ASO acquires the below-mentioned specific knowledge and skills and applies these in daily practice.
During these internships in autopsy-, histo- and cytopathology, the ASO acquires enough background knowledge to understand and conduct the techniques that are used within this specialism (e.g. histochemistry, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology…)
The ASO acquires skills in peroperatory and emergency diagnostics
The ASO is to operate with increasing autonomy and complexity, in a scientifically founded manner.
The goals are met in practice with:
Morning seminars: daily discussions of selected cases and all malignant cases (1h/day)
Supervision at the multi-head microscope from biopsies and cytology preparations (daily)
Technical sessions and seminars (execute autopsy technique and macroscopy technique)
Case discussions
Participate in MOCs and anatomical sessions
The ASO is actively involved concerning the technical laboratory, including control of the pre-analytical phase and validation of produced results (post-analytical phase). He/she remains critical and complements the practical knowledge by learning background theory from the different sources of information that are provided.
OLR 1: Has acquired profound medical knowledge and insights in the specialism (M, W).
OLR 3: Has further enhanced the problem-solving capacity and applies this in practice (M, W).
OLR 6: Knows the possibilities of other health care disciplines and the expertise of others in patient health care (C, M).
OLR 2: Has acquired the skills, inherent to the specialism, and applies these correctly.
OLR 13: Can participate in the organization of health care and in the policy of the department (Ma).
OLR 19: Satisfies the general and specific final objectives, inherent to the specialism, concerning diagnostics and syndromes/diseases (M, W).
OLR 15: Takes into account the economic aspects of medicine and uses the available resources accordingly, avoiding under- and overuse (M).
OLR 16: Knows the principles of medical informatics for delivering optimal patient care and maintaining own expertise (M).
OLR 17: Keeps further developing and improving own skills.
OLR 18: Is capable of introducing “standards of care” and quality requirements with regard to the different aspects of formulating one’s own specialism (M, Ma).
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Portfolio with performance interviews and assessment interview at the end, level expert (50%)
Clinical examination (50%)
PASS/FAIL: FAIL for 1 part = FAIL for the whole course
Additional information concerning the evaluation:
Portfolio
This part will preferentially be evaluated with the use of the portfolio, including logbook (accreditation committee).
Internship evaluation by coordinator: continuous evaluation of the ASO, based on performances during daily morning seminars, supervision at the multi-head microscope, case discussions. The assessment is displayed in the portfolio.
Exam
The candidate receives approximately 10 cases to solve (and all applied investigations and techniques). The candidate is given time to prepare oneself (with access to textbooks), after which he/she discusses the cases at the multi-head microscope in presence of the jury. The jury is composed of all accredited pathologists of the department.
Execution, reporting and discussion of an autopsy.
