Course Content

Patient care and medical-technical skills: the ASO is given the chance during the education to practice a wide array of domains within the specialism. During these internships, the ASO acquires specific knowledge and skills (as mentioned in the VLIR document level expert) and applies these in practice. 

The following procedural skills will be dealt with: 

  • Electrocardiography (+ evaluation) 

  • Basic life support 

  • Arterial puncture 

  • Venipuncture  

  • Collect material for microbiological investigation 

  • Pleural puncture 

  • Ascites puncture 

  • Insertion gastric tube 

  • Insertion bladder tube 

  • Intubation 

  • Insertion deep-venous lines 

  • Insertion arterial line 

  • Lumbar puncture 

The learning outcomes are acquired in practice by: 

  • Multidisciplinary staff meetings (1h/week) 

  • Staff meetings within the field (1h/week) 

  • Case discussions 

  • Room tour 

  • Sessions for technical skills (skills lab and supervised skills) 

  • Supervised consultation

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

  • Portfolio with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
