Course Content

​The ASO is provided with the chance to practice a wide variety of domains within the specialism. During these internships, the ASO acquires specific knowledge and skills with increasing complexity and applies these in practice with increasing independence.  

The internships throughout the education are:  

• Emergency department: 

• general (prehospital included) 

• traumatology – surgery  

• pediatry 

• internal medicine 

• Intensive care 

• surgical 

• medical 

• cardial 

• Forensic medicine 

• Obstetrics 

• Imaging (emergency ultrasound, echocardiography) 

 

The following procedural skills will be dealt with (if applicable):  

• airway management and respiratory care: difficult trachea-intubation, alternative difficult airway care, tracheotomy, intubation of the child, cervix intubation, difficult respiration (ARDS, asthma…).  

• external and internal cardiac pacing, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).  

• polytrauma care: following the polytrauma protocol 

• circulatory care: pericardiocentesis, intra-osseous line 

• regional and spinal anesthesia techniques 

• The mentioned topics cover the following syndromes, including the associated skills and techniques:  

  • cardiac arrest: adults (ACLS) and children (PALS) 

  • airway care and respiratory insufficiency: 

  • difficult airway (intubation), complex respiratory care (ARDS, status asthmaticus) 

  • great obstruction of the airways 

  • failing respiratory muscles (e.g. Guillain Barre, myasthenia gravis) 

  • acute headache: stroke, sinus thrombosis, IC bleeding 

  • syncope: long QT… 

  • convulsions: status epilepticus 

  • coma: toxic, metabolic (liver, diabetes…) 

  • thoracic pain: (list is not a limitation) 

  • chest pain protocol 

  • acute coronary syndrome 

  • thoracic aneurysm 

  • complex arrhythmias  

  • shock: intractable shock cardiogenic, septic 

  • acute abdomen 

  • urogenital emergencies: PID, extra-uterine pregnancies, torsion testis, emergency delivery, loss of blood during delivery 

  • infections: bacterial meningitis, septic shock, overwhelming pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis, toxic shock syndrome, SARS, avian influenza, botulism, anthrax. 

  • imported pathologies: malaria, typhoid fever, rickettsioses, Dengue 

  • complex electrolyte- and acid-base disorders, including Ca and Mg. 

  • acute hematological problems: thrombopenia, DIC, coagulopathy, TTP, neutropenic fever, massive transfusion.  

  • ophthalmological emergencies: acute glaucoma, chemical, infectious, traumatological corneal pathology, retinal detachment, thrombosis and centralis retinae.  

  • intoxications and toxidromes:  

  • psychotropics, alcohol, drugs (excitantia, opioids…) 

  • CO, drugs in general 

  • industrial toxins (e.g. cyanide)  

  • complex trauma care: 

  • prehospital; transport; trauma to the head, cervix, pelvis, thorax and abdomen 

  • polytrauma protocol, trauma of a pregnant woman 

  • burns, frostbite, heat stroke, drowning, electrocution, lightning strike, diving incidents 

  • pediatric emergencies 

  • reanimation, (pseudo)croup, dehydration, febrile seizures  

  • meningococcal sepsis, meningitis 

  • child abuse 

  • dermatological emergencies: erythroderma, blister diseases, necrotizing fasciitis, erysipelas, zona 

  • complex locomotive syndromes: trauma, luxation, infection  

  • psychiatric emergencies:  

  • acute psychosis, organic causes of psychological dysfunction, suicidal behavior 

  • aggression, drug-dependence​
