Systematic overview of the concepts and theories of language, text and image that are essential to practice and research in Translation, Interpreting, Journalism and Critical Applied Linguistics. More particularly, we will address following topics: Semiotics, historical introduction; Semiotics, the basis (Peirce, Morris, De Saussure, Barthes); Semiotics and representation (Jakobson: function of language; Benveniste: instance of discourse; Bakhtin: speech genres); Pragmatics (Wittgenstein: language games; Austin/Searle: speech acts; Butler: performativity); The logic of image (Wittgenstein, Mersch, Mitchell, Boehm); Image acts and representation in images (Warburg, Bredekamp, Ginzburg, Panofsky, Foucault, Searle). The theories discussed will be illustrated in cases and applied in the critical analysis of texts and images, focusing on language as symbolic power and issues related to language and ideology.
The lectures alternate between digitally with lecture recordings and live on campus (if necessary, on campus lectures are converted to live digital). In the physical and digital lectures, reading and searching assignments are given to document the course. Texts are provided for compulsory independent reading as well as for documentation purposes.

The student has in-depth knowledge of theories and concepts about language, text and image, and can apply this knowledge in the critical analysis and research of linguistic, communicative, media and image applications;
the student has knowledge of logical reasoning and arguments and can apply this knowledge both in the production of texts, discourses, and presentations, and in the analysis;
the student can understand the historical nature of thought systems and theoretical concepts;
the student can situate current discourses in a global and historical context;
the student understands the principles and processes of current cultural discourses and the use of images;
the student can reflect critically on the knowledge, skills and methods he or she has learned, and is aware of the limitations thereof;
the student is prepared to consider alternative approaches;
the student can adopt a reasoned stance after having analyzed different views;
the student has respect for values, norms and views of other people.

The written Take Home exam consists of open questions, reflection questions and essay questions about the content of the syllabus, the lectures, the reading and searching assignments, and the powerpoint presentations with recordings.
