In this course you will build on the insights and skills you have already developed in 'Taal- en vertaalpraktijk Engels-Nederlands I'. Our focus will be on written interlingual translation; in Semester 1 you will translate from English into Dutch, in Sem 2 from Dutch into English. However, we will also conduct some listening activities and speaking exercises (intermodal paraphrasing, sight translation, public speaking, etc.), either in class or via activities on the learning platform (blended learning). These types of exercises not only help to prepare you for any future interpreting practice, but they also foster productive language skills in general.
We will focus on the translation product and process, reflect on translation challenges (e.g., text comprehension, lexical and terminological challenges, grammatical pitfalls), discuss translation options and evaluate them critically. We will also gain more experience in using digital translation tools.
The course has the following concrete objectives:
1) supporting both your English language acquisition process and your Dutch language proficiency as regards grammar and vocabulary (words and phrases), as well as the 4 language skills (speaking, listening, writing, reading);
2) deepening your language and idiomatic awareness by reflecting on the similarities and differences between the two language systems;
3) improving your insights into text analysis, by reflecting on concepts such as text structure, intertextuality, communicative function, and target audience.
4) boosting your translation and intercultural skills by reflecting on the similarities and differences in language use and language practices in various settings in order to achieve varying communicative goals.
The study materials consist of class powerpoints, assignments in class and on the learning platform, quizzes and exercises on the learing platform, feedback on your assignments, and your notes.
Students can translate a wide range of authentic source texts into correct and idiomatic Dutch, and vice versa. (English level of proficiency: C1 receptive skills, B2++ productive skills);
Students can make efficient and judicious use of a range of digital translation tools;
Students can find a fitting solution for translation challenges;
Students can identify and motivate their translation choices and research strategies;
Students have deepened their insight into the specificity of the English and Dutch language (grammar, syntax, spelling, idiomaticity);
Students have widened their lexical range and can recruit this lexical range in their written and oral practice.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

English > Dutch translation (Sem 1) is assessed in the first exam period and constitutes 40% of the final mark. Dutch > English translation (Sem 2) is assessed in the second exam period and also constitutes 40% of the final mark.
A student cannot pass this course if they obtain an 8/20 or less for (1) the exam in the first exam period (English > Dutch) or (2) the exam in the second period (Dutch > English). The lowest grade will then be entered as the final grade.
If the student passes (1) or (2) but not the other part in the first exam session, they will be given an exemption in the second session for the part they did pass. If they again score less than 8/20 on this part, the lowest grade obtained will be entered as the final grade.
Evaluation second session:
80% written exam, 20% assignment
A student who passed the continuous assessment component in the first session can obtain an exemption for the assignment in the second session.
The use of generative AI or MT tools is prohibited, unless specified.
