Course Content

In this course, topics within the domains of language perception, language attitudes and language ideology are discussed. The focus in this is on the Dutch language (area). The classes focus on the scientific approach to linguistic attitudes research, but also on the societal relevance of this subject and in particular its relevance for future language professionals.

Doelstellingen

- Students understand the theoretical concepts covered in the course and can explain these in their own words. They are able to link these concepts to the scientific literature discussed during the course.

- Students acquire a thorough understanding of the methods commonly used in linguistic attitudes research and can critically evaluate those methods.

- Students can argue the societal impact language attitudes can have, as well as their relevance to the language professional.

- Students can apply the above theoretical and methodological insights in a small-scale replication study with the support of the lecturer.

- Students can link the results of their own small-scale replication study to the concepts, theoretical and societal paradigms covered during the course with minimal support of the lecturer.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 40% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
